Wayne Taylor Regional Manager - South Australia
Clipsal My fifth Clipsal - and the best yet - has dominated this last period! Record crowds of 237,000 (up 25,000 on last year) and an enhanced scope allowed us to show how well we perform when we get the chance. Comments at the daily debriefings confirmed that 2004 was the cleanest any could remember including the Formula 1 Grand Prix before Melbourne pinched it from us South Australians!
There was a major focus on toilets at the Event from the Premier down following last year. We met the challenge by providing a Toilet Manager, Ray Aldridge to control not just toilets but stock and keys. This proved to be very successful and will be looked at for other major events. Well done Ray.
The 2003 Clipsal 500 was named as Australia’s best Major Festival or Event at the 2004 Australian Tourism Awards in April. Congratulations to Brian Gleeson, John Hadaway and all at SA Motor Sport. As a major contributor to this event, we are delighted to be a part of this success. I can only encourage SAMC to enter 2004. The Clipsal is Hall of Fame material and Adelaide loves it. Some interesting facts:-
- Grandstand seating at the Clipsal has grown each year – from 15,000 in 1999 to 25,000 this year.
- At 35% penetration, Adelaide has the highest level of interest in televised motor sport - compared to Brisbane (33%), Melbourne (32%), Sydney (31%), Canberra (30%) and Perth (28%).
- Motorsport rates higher than AFL in Brisbane and Sydney as a favoured TV sport and higher than Rugby League in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth. Overall, motorsport rates better than athletics, basketball, rugby union and golf as a favoured TV sport.
One measure of performance is the number of helpdesk calls. This year was the smallest number since Cleanevent’s involvement, which began with the 1993 Grand Prix. Thank you to Belinda and Jo for managing the few calls we had so efficiently. It was great to have supervisors from Queensland, NSW and Victoria here. The facilities in the committee room in the Members stand worked brilliantly. Thanks must go to the SAJC and in particular Brenton Wilkinson and Ross Agius for their cooperation. Having somewhere to “crash” at the end of the day really helped to recharge the batteries for the next day.
DMG - Home & Lifestyle Show - April This was the second event handled for DMG in the last 6 months at the Showgrounds. Both shows ran over 4 days with good crowds and great cooperation from the RAS team. The next show is the Timber & Working With Wood show in July and the Sunday Mail Home Show in October. Thanks to all at DMG especially Deana, Liam Sullivan and Peter O’Flynn.
SAJC (South Australian Jockey Club) Servicing the main race meetings in the metro area at Morphettville, Victoria Park and Cheltenham, we have built a good rapport not just with Brenton Wilkinson and Bart Cowan but other great guys like Ross Agius and Paul Green. Having use of the facilities at Victoria Park for the Clipsal 500 is just one aspect to this relationship. Being involved in the Adelaide Cup, Melbourne Cup meeting at Morphettville, the Magic Millions, etc., will hopefully lead to a longer-term agreement. Having just completed the Adelaide Cup it was disappointing to have bad weather for the 3rd year in succession. It had little impact on those brave punters who put the weather aside and enjoyed the day regardless. As for us cleaners, we’ll work in any weather and have done so all over the world!
